For the Poor and Middle Class The Recession is Permanent

I have realized for years that there was something terribly wrong with our current economy. This article by Barbara Ehrenreich the author of Nickeled and Dimmed is one of the few that I have seen that really seems to tell it like it is. It is so disappointing to read the comments. People don't seem to realize that when people work for less than what cost the live a stable life the market is not working. The employer benefits in the short term, but the economy in general suffers greatly as the employee's productivity falls and crime and disease rise.

I am not saying that there is a simplistic answer. As far as I can tell the vast differential between the cost of living in the United States and the cost of living in China and India but American workers at almost an impossible disadvantage. I can't see any other outcome but a decrease in the American standard of living. If this decrease is managed with support given to the losers in this new society we may be able to make it. But if it is just an uncontrolled collapse of standard of living that works its way up high into the middle classes the result quite possibly will be the kind of political instability that is just too dangerous for a nuclear power.

Shame on you. Anti-immigration people claim that they are not racist. But articles like this clearly show that this is just a lie.

Our current immigration laws are disgrace. When they were enacted the politicians that promoted them didn't bother to hide the fact that they were appealing to crudest racial prejudices of the country, instead they glorified in it.

These immigration policies have diminished the American spirit. America used to be a great experiment that welcomed all who wanted to participate.

But those that were not only welcomed into the country but given free land did not want to pay it forward. They did not want to compete with those that would worker harder for less.

They just like the slave owners and then segregationists in the south wanted to cheat. They wanted to change the rules so that they would be able to win without really trying.

This same slovenly lazy attitude is in the anti-immigrant movement today. They don't want to get off their butts and work for a living and make an economy that can absorb those who share our beliefs in freedom.

I would encourage you to read the newly discovered letters of the Frank family on their attempts to escape to America and realize that this same anti-immigrant thuggery was just as much to blame for Ann Frank's death as the Nazis.

The Germans didn't want to compete with their Jewish fellow citizens so the killed them. We didn't want compete with hardworking refugees so we didn't save them.

But to resort to crude slurs against this woman's virtue just shows you for what you are cheap bigoted thugs. The fact that the to our disgrace we have written your craven prejudices into our law doesn't make you any less despicable.

The final measure of your shame is that you would wish an American citizen to leave the greatest nation in the world for any reason just shows the contempt you have for our national values.
